Access and Outreach

I have developed interests in education policy and actively participate in outreach and access work for modern languages and linguistics specifically and Higher Education generally.

Modern Languages and Linguistics

Both in Oxford and Cambridge, I have been extensively involved in organising and running a wide range of subject-specific open days and taster events to raise the profile of modern languages and linguistics. Having previously worked on schools liaison projects and delivered access presentations to young people, I am always keen to hear from colleagues wanting to collaborate on access and outreach work or young people keen on studying modern languages or linguistics at university.

The New Beginnings Project

I am currently working in collaboration with Lord Michael Wills, Dr Helen Watson (St John's College, Cambridge) and partners in the public and third sectors on a project to improve the number of young people from a care background progressing to Higher Education, which is currently very low. Please email me if you would be interested in discussing the project or if you would like copies of the research and policy papers I have prepared on this topic.

School and College Leadership and Governance

Prior to arriving in Oxford I was Vice-Chair of Governors at Long Road Sixth Form College in Cambridge. There I chaired the Audit Committee and was also a member of the Standard Committee, which focussed on matters concerning curriculum delivery and quality assurance.I had also previously been a Governor of Brighton, Hove and Sussex Sixth Form College in Hove.

From 2013 - 2016 I was also a Trustee and Governor at the Red Balloon Centre in Cambridge. The Red Balloon Centre is a specialist school which provides a theraputic learning environment for severely bullied children. I felt very priviledged to serve on their Board of Trustees and took on specific responsibilities in the fields of progression, careers and health and safety.
