The third Oxford City Race, organised by OUOC, will offer a chance to test your orienteering skills once again against ancient cobbled streets and complex passageways amidst the dreaming spires of Oxford in one of the biggest races of its kind in the country. After the success of the inaugural City Race and the 2007 City Race, this year's event will once again take you through the heart of Oxford past the dreaming spires. We will be providing a range of courses for new and improving orienteers - scroll down to "New to Orienteering?" for further details.

Event Information
Events on Sunday & Other Attractions
If you're considering travelling a long way to take part in the City Race, why not make a weekend of it? The City Race on the Saturday can be combined with the November Classic organised by SOC
Those of a less energetic bent may instead be interested in the dinosaurs and dodos at the University Museum of Natural History (open 10am-5pm) or the shrunken heads and spears at the Pitt Rivers Museum (open 10am-4.30pm), both of which are located approximately 200m from the assembly area.
Post-run refreshments may be purchased in the Parks from mobile crperie Crpes 'O' Mania, which will be open from 10am-5pm, or from any of Oxford's numerous pubs and hostelries.
Assembly Area and Parking
As previously, assembly will be in the University Parks, located to the north of Oxford city centre, as shown on this map. There will be an area for club tents and banners in the Old Parks - the central of the three orange areas on this map. To increase the presence of the sport and the let the locals and tourists know that there's something interesting going on, all clubs are urged to bring along their flags or banners.
Parking in central Oxford is extremely limited, and so all competitors are strongly encouraged to use Oxford's excellent Park & Ride system from Water Eaton. Parking is free; return tickets cost 2.20 per adult or 4 for two adults travelling together, with accompanied children under 16 travelling free. Buses are at least every 15 minutes on Saturdays, and estimated journey times are up to 10-15 minutes. Get off at the Keble Road stop, cross Banbury Road and walk east along Keble Road to enter the Parks through the Keble gate, opposite the east end of Keble Road. This route will be signed on the day.
Map
All courses will use a 1:5000 map drawn to sprint specifications. For those unfamiliar with sprint maps, details can be found in this article.
Courses
Course | Men | Women | Colour Coded | Approximate Straight-Line Length | Entries updated 26th October |
1 | Open Men | 6km | 102 | ||
2 | Vet M40+ | Open Women | 5km | 123
3 | Super Vet M55+ | Vet W40+ | 4km | 107
4 | Junior City Race M/W16-18 | Super Vet W55+ | 3km | 44
5 | Junior M14-16 | Junior W14-16 | Orange | 3km | 36 |
6 | Mini M10-12 | Mini W10-12 | Yellow | 2km | 8 |
7 | White | 1.5km | 5 | ||
8 | Red | 4km | 2 |
Due to the nature of urban orienteering, the straight-line lengths given are significantly shorter than the shortest feasible route. This is particularly true on courses 1-4, so that the shortest feasible route on course 4 will in fact be longer than that on course 5. It is expected that both the Men's and Women's Open courses will have a winning time of around 35 minutes.
Those wishing to score points in the Nopesport Urban League should enter the courses labelled with their category (e.g. Veteran Men on course 2, Supervet Women on course 4). Points in the Junior category will be allocated on course 4, continued onto course 5 for M/W14 and below.
Please note: Courses 1-4 and 8 will cross numerous unmarshalled public roads, some of them quite busy, and competitors will be responsible for their own safety when crossing them. For this reason, M/W16s should only enter courses 1-4 or 8 with parental permission, and M/W14s and below will not be permitted on these courses.
A free string course will also be available.
Punching
SI punching will be used.
