1st Week |
Thursday 15th October, 8pm
St. John's College Video Room |
- Freshers' Drinks featuring Doctor Who Confidential & The Eleventh Doctor
- A chance to meet the regulars and get a taste for DocSoc with an evening of free drinks and Doctor
Who. In between the drinking and the chit-chat, we'll be watching the DW: Confidential episodes narrated by David
Tennant (he's such a fanboy - we can't wait for him to be contractually able to attend conventions), and The Eleventh
Doctor, which gives a neat overview of the entirety of Who-History, as well as introducing new Doctor Matt Smith.

2nd Week |
Thursday 22nd October, 8pm
St. John's College Video Room |
- The Talons of Weng-Chiang
- The Fourth Doctor and Leela visit Victorian London, and come across some sinister goings-on in a
decaying music hall. Complete with Tom Baker dressing as Sherlock Holmes and Troubling Racial Stereotypes (I may have to
put my fingers in my ears and hum), this is a truly Nineteenth-Century romp.
|
3rd Week |
Thursday 29th October, 8pm
St. John's College Video Room |
- The Awakening & Midnight
- A double bill of psychic malevolence. In The Awakening, the Fifth Doctor, with Turlough (public
schoolboy; actually an alien) and Tegan (Australian air hostess; probably not an alien), come across some strange
happenings during the English Civil War. In Midnight, Russell T Davies demonstrates that he can terrify us without
any special effects. This episode also features Colin Morgan (Merlin) as an emo teen!
|
4th Week |
Thursday 5th November, 8pm
St. John's College Video Room |
- The Sarah Jane Adventures
- A few episodes of this CBBC show, including the ones guest-starring David Tennant as the Doctor - we
haven't entirely finalised which other episodes we'll be watching.
|
5th Week |
Thursday 12th November, 8pm
Location TBC |
- Guest Speaker: Rob Shearman
- Award-winning playwright and writer of Dalek, the licensed dissenter of the Cardiff scriptwriters
gives us a chance to ask questions and discover the inside story about working on Doctor Who. We'll be inviting members
of other societies along to this, but only we get to take him for dinner afterwards!
|
Sunday 5th November
Starting point & time TBC |
- Cyber Pub Crawl
- An experimental new event, in which we attempt to find four pubs that will each let us watch an episode of
Revenge of the Cybermen in the corner.
|
6th Week |
Thursday 19th November, 8pm
St. John's College Video Room |
- The Three Doctors
- A chance to see the Doctor in his younger days, this episode features Doctors 1-3 (Hartnell,
Troughton, and Pertwee), UNIT, and an appearance from a letter in the Greek alphabet.
|
7th Week |
Thursday 26th November, 8pm
North Quad Lecture Room, St. John's |
- The Geek Quiz
- Once again we return to battle for the crown of geekiest of the geek societies, as representatives
from DocSoc, TolkSoc, OUSFG, AnimeSoc, and others, convene to ask each one another rounds of questions.
|
8th Week |
Thursday 3rd December, 8pm
St. John's College Video Room |
- The Twin Dilemma
- To finish off the term in style, we revisit the society's dubious fixation on Colin Baker's Face.
(Directors in this era of Who have an odd habit of continually marking cliffhangers with an upsetting close-up.) To
some, The Twin Dilemma marks the nadir of 80s Who - eyewateringly bad costumes, an inexplicably capricious and
aggressive Doctor, irritating child actors. To those of us who planned this termcard, though (and if you disagree with
our choices, join the committee and impose your own tastes!), it is the zenith of 80s Who awesomeness. There will be
drinking games. There will be sarcasm. There will be Colin Baker's Face.
