Michaelmas Term 2019

1st Week Thursday 17th October, 8pm

Seminar Room, Corpus Christi
The Third Doctor
Spearhead from Space
To kick off the academic year, we’re watching the first episode with the Third Doctor, in which he fights a plastic-controlling alien which will no doubt be familiar to most Freshers that grew up on the new series. For a bit of context, the Doctor has been sent to and trapped on Earth by his own kind as a punishment. Newly regenerated, he is found by UNIT during a somewhat suspicious meteorite shower. Along with Liz Shaw and the Brigadier, the Doctor must work to thwart this would-be colonising alien.
Sunday 20th October

Sebright Arms, Coate St., London
Quiz of Rassilon
This monthly quiz, based in a London pub, is usually centred around a few particular Doctor Who episodes, which WhoSoc members marathon during the day on Sunday (or occasionally the day before too if there’s lots to cover) before travelling up to London with life-size Eccleston in tow to battle it out in the quiz against other Doctor Who fans from across the country. This time around, the stories featured will be those from Series 9 of so-called “Nu-Who” and the epic Colin Baker saga The Trial of a Time Lord, with a round specifically focussing on Peri, one of his companions. All are welcome to join us for the quiz up in London, or just pop along for the marathon (we understand that many of you freshers might have a matriculation to suffer through!). Keep an eye out for more details as they come...
2nd Week Thursday 24th October, 8pm

Seminar Room, Corpus Christi
The Tenth Doctor The Twelfth Doctor
Extremis/The Girl in the Fireplace
This week we’re back in the modern run of Doctor Who. On show will be the Twelfth Doctor story Extremis, in which the Doctor and companions Bill and Nardole are called on by the Vatican to investigate a suicide-inducing book called the Veritas. But with the Doctor still sightless following the events of Oxygen, how can they possibly get to the bottom of this? Meanwhile in The Girl in the Fireplace, the Tenth Doctor, with Rose and Mickey on hand, finds himself on a rather odd ship, with “time windows” dotted around, one of which leads through a fireplace into the room of little Reinette. Unfortunately, this little girl is far more important than it may at first appear.
3rd Week Thursday 31th October, 8pm

Seminar Room, Corpus Christi
The Second Doctor
Tomb of the Cybermen
Now we head back to the '60s and a black & white story starring the Second Doctor, Patrick Troughton with companions Jamie and Victoria. The story is set on Telos, as an archaeological expedition there tries to uncover the titular tomb of the Cybermen. However, not everyone is there uniquely in the interests of archaeological discovery, and they have all severely underestimated their quarry. Luckily, the Doctor & co. arrive just as things start getting interesting.
4th Week Thursday 7th November, 8pm

Seminar Room, Corpus Christi
The Ninth Doctor
Dalek with special guest Rob Shearman
Join the Ninth Doctor and Rose as they confront one of the Doctor’s oldest recurring enemies; the eponymous Daleks. This is one of the rare episodes set in the US, this time visiting a collection of alien artefacts curated by Henry Van Statten. However, this arrogant entrepreneur may have bitten off a little more than he can chew by collecting a live specimen of one of the most ruthless species in the Universe.

This evening we will also have the distinct pleasure of being joined by the episode’s writer, Rob Shearman!
5th Week Thursday 14th November, 8pm

MBI Al Jaber Building, Corpus Christi
The Geek Quiz
In the legendary Geek Quiz, members of Oxford's geekiest societies get together to battle it out for the crown of "team who won that term". If you can write a round not entirely related to Doctor Who, bring it along. Please ensure your round is visual – make a PowerPoint with each question displayed on a different slide. Our society usually divides up into a few different teams – come along and help us beat those pesky TrekSoc-ers!
Sunday 24th November, 7pm

Sebright Arms, Coate St., London
Quiz of Rassilon
If one geeky quiz in a week isn’t quite enough for you, there’s also November’s Quiz of Rassilon this Sunday. At the time of writing this, having misplaced the society’s TARDIS, we don’t yet know all the stories we’ll be marathoning and getting quizzed on up in London, other than that NuWho series 10 will feature. Therefore keep your eyes on mailboxes and Facebook pages to find out more as and when we ourselves find out.
6th Week Thursday 21st November, 8pm

Seminar Room, Corpus Christi
The Seventh Doctor
The Curse of Fenric with special guest Mark Ayres
In this story, the Seventh Doctor and Ace arrive at a WWII naval base where a scientist manages to accidentally release an ancient entity by using their prototype German codebreaker to translate some runes on a local crypt (never a good idea realistically). Luckily for them, the Doctor was the one to put the ancient entity there in the first place! Also starring haemovores (aka vampires), chess and a sudden unexpected companion backstory paradox.

Mark Ayres, our special guest, scored the background music of this story, and was instrumental in the creation of the special edition.
7th Week Thursday 28th November, 6:45pm

Golden Cross Pizza Express
The Thirteenth Doctor
Series 11 Randomiser and Termly Meal
As is customary for Week 7, we’ll be having our end of term meal at one of Oxford’s many restaurants – keep an eye out in your email box for the chance to have your say in which one that is. Afterwards, all are welcome to join us back at Corpus Christi for the series 11 randomiser, in which we will be watching one of the 10 episodes aired last year. (Fingers crossed it’s not The Tsuranga Conundrum...)
8th Week Thursday 5th December, 8pm

Seminar Room, Corpus Christi
The Fourth Doctor
Logopolis (and Committee Meeting)
Our final story of term will also be the final story of Tom Baker’s Doctor. The Doctor is visiting Logopolis in the hopes of their mathematicians helping him to fix the TARDIS’s Chameleon Circuit. However, the Master has gotten there first with a hypnotised Nyssa, and accidentally broken the universe. The Master is then forced to team up with the Doctor (and companions Tegan, Adric and Nyssa) to avert this catastrophe.

Please do join us after the serial for our Committee Meeting to get a say in what we get up to next term.
