1st Week |
Thursday 29th April, 8pm
St. John's College Video Room |
- Day of the Daleks
- Yet another UNIT-supervised peace conference comes under strange & mysterious attack. isn't it lucky that the Third
Doctor is stuck working for them in this time period (whenever it's meant to be)? I shudder to think what it would have been like if
they'd had to go it alone...

2nd Week |
Thursday 6th May, 8pm
St. John's College Video Room |
- The Ice Warriors
- After everyone enjoyed the Second Doctor serial The Invasion so much last term, we've decided to watch
another incomplete story (with cartoon reconstructions of the missing episodes). The companions this time are Jamie (yes, the
touchy-feely chap with the kilt again) and Victoria (the imaginatively-named Victorian). In this story, a Martian warrior is discovered
frozen in an Earth glacier.

3rd Week |
Thursday 13th May, 8pm
St. John's College Video Room |
- The Keeper of Traken
- We don't often get to see Tom Baker's Doctor interacting with Anthony Ainley's Master, but every time that we do is
an absolute treat. In this serial, the utopian Traken Union is threatened by a strange statue...
This story also sees us meet new companion Nyssa, whose costumes I believe to still be visible from time to time in Oxford's goth clubs.
Unfairly-maligned companion Adric, the pre-pubescent maths genius, also features.

4th Week |
Thursday 20th May, 8pm
St. John's College Video Room |
- The Aztecs
- If you think that the Tenth Doctor's interactions with Rose are out-of-character for the asexual Doctor, then this
First Doctor episode will prove you very wrong. While Barbara is off becoming an Aztec goddess and trying to change history, the Doctor
gets engaged to an Aztec woman...
|
5th Week |
Thursday 27th May, 8pm
North Quad Lecture Room, St. John's |
- The Geek Quiz
- In the now-legendary Geek Quiz, members of Oxford's geekiest societies get together in order to battle it out for
the crown of "team who won that term". Start writing your rounds now!
|
6th Week |
Thursday 3rd June, 8pm
St. John's College Video Room |
- Battlefield
- The Seventh Doctor is Merlin. Does this episode need any further promotion? Very well; Ace has a new
girlfriend, we get Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart out of retirement, and meet the new Brigadier - played magnificently by Angela Bruce of
Press Gang and that gender-swap episode of Red Dwarf.
|
7th Week |
Thursday 10th June, 8pm
Mongolian Wok, Hythe Bridge Street |
- DocSoc Meal
- This term, we continue our quest to eat every type of cuisine available in Oxford with a trip to the Mongolian Wok
which, it turns out, is just down past the end of George Steet. You'll need to be a member of the society, and to book in advance, in
order to attend this meeting.

8th Week |
Thursday 17th June, 8pm
St. John's College Video Room |
TimelashVengeance on Varos
Once more, Eighth Week is Eighties Week! This term, our trip through the worst excesses of the Colin Baker era
brings us to Timelash. Here we have the usual themes of aliens perving over Peri and the Sixth Doctor being overly pompous and terribly
dressed; to this heady mix we add Paul Darrow camping things up even more than he used to as Kerr Avon in Blake's 7, and
cutting-edge special effects made entirely of tinsel.
- Timelash was postponed until Michaelmas 2010 due to not having the DVD to hand. The meeting instead screened
Vengeance on Varos after Glyn kindly went to fetch a copy.
