Coming to Oxford...

...from Princeton

Senior visitors

Temporary membership of a college can usually be arranged one term in advance; accommodation for up to 6 days in a college guest room can usually be arranged one term in advance. Occasionally rooms can be found for longer stays; for periods of 1-4 weeks, the University Club is probably the best and most convenient option. When planning your trip, remember the dates of the Oxford terms (Michaelmas: early October-early December; Hilary: mid-January - mid-March; Trinity: late April-late June); bear in mind that as currently constructed the Thursday visiting research seminar in Michaelmas Term is devoted to philosophy of science, not philosophy of physics.

Graduate students

Graduates wishing to come to Oxford under the exchange scheme should speak in the first instance to their supervisor at Princeton, who will make all the necessary arrangements in consultation with philosophers of physics at Oxford.

You will not have to pay University fees or College fees, and during your stay you will be treated in respect of teaching and university facilities exactly like an Oxford D.Phil student, but membership of a college, including dining rights and accomodation, will have to be arranged separately in each case, and a long time in advance. Allow if you can a year.

The University can assist you in finding accommodation. But again give plenty of notice, particularly for longer stays.

There is also a large rental housing market in Oxford, but here the opposite applies: it is difficult to arrange rental more than a month in advance, and it is often easier to arrange it at only a week or two's notice. The best advice, if you are renting on the private market, is to arrange to stay in College guest rooms for 3-5 days on your arrival, having arranged appointments to view appartments and shared houses the week before, whilst still in Princeton.

Involve the Oxford-Princeton coordinator at an early stage of your plans. If you want college accommodation, he or she will be the one to arrrange it. If you do want acccommodation on the private market, and you wish to stay in a guest room for a few days whilst making arrangements, that will anyway have to be arranged by a college member (so usually an Oxford philosopher or physicist); the Oxford-Princeton coordinator will be happy to help out.

Undergraduate students

Undergraduates wishing to come to Oxford under the exchange scheme should investigate the courses available at Oxford and the study abroad website of Princeton University. You should go to the Study Abroad Office at Princeton in the Autumn term of your sophomore year. Note that the exchange is only available in the junior year, and you must be in either the Physics Department or the Philosophy Department; it is for the full year.

Accommodation will be arranged for you at the college of your exchange partner in Oxford.
