Catalogues of British libraries

UK OPAC (online public access catalogues)

Free online access, either through the Internet or Telnet, to major library catalogues in Britain and Ireland (including higher education institutions' libraries, national and public libraries, and those based in museums and art galleries).

Available catalogues are:

Some of the British Library catalogues are available online, through OPAC'97 (free service, in some cases catalogues list citations from 1975 onwards) and Blaise (subscription service, offering access to the Document Supply Centre's ordering system). The Blaise databases cover publications and grey literature from the 1950s onwards.

  • British National Bibliography (books and first issues of serials published in Britain and Ireland from 1950 onwards)
  • British Library General Catalogue of Printed Books (catalogue of the former Department of Printed Books at the British Museum, containing over 3.8 million records)
  • Books at Boston Spa (all books published and held at the British Library Document Supply Centre)
  • Boston Spa Serials (journals and serials since c.1700 held at the British Library Document Supply Centre)
  • Boston Spa Conferences (conference proceedings since 1890 held at the British Library Document Supply Centre)
  • Business Information (science, business and technology, 1975 onwards)
  • Eighteenth Century Short Title Catalogue (all types of printed materials, books, lists, advertisements, rules, songs and catalogues, published throughout the world during the eighteenth century)
  • Humanities and Social Sciences Catalogue (1975 to date)
  • Incunable Short Title Catalogue (bibliographic references to material printed with movable type in the 15th century, up 1501. It covers catalogues from the British Isles, the USA, Canada, Italy (including the Vatican), Belgium, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Japan, Scandinavia and South America, and lower coverage for Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Polish, Hungarian and Czech libraries. The CD-ROM version includes illustrations)
  • Map Library Catalogue (1974 to date)
  • Register of Preservation Microforms (1455 to date. Coverage of holdings in danger of deterioration. Contributes to the global Mellon Microfilming Project)
  • Music Library Catalogue (1980 onwards)
  • SIGLE (System for Information on Grey Literature in Europe, aka British National Bibliography for Report Literature, 1980 to current)
  • Science Reference and Information Service (1974 to date)
  • Available only on Blaise: Library of Congress Databases, Whitaker (books in print), HMSO catalogue, British Library Information Sciences Service, ISSN National Serials Data Centre file, University of London catalogue, Higher Education Learning Programme Information Service, Audiovisual materials catalogue.

Many of these catalogues are also available on CD-ROM, sometimes offering greater coverage of material (but not updated as regularly).
